The mourning and cremation ceremony for the 11 members of the Bhatia family, who were found dead in their Burari residence on Sunday, saw at least 150 and more family members, relatives, friends, neighbours and well-wishers gather at Nigambodh Ghat, in the Kashmere Gate area for their last rites on Monday evening. On completion of the post-mortem examination, which revealed that the cause of death was in fact suicide, the bodies were handed over by the police for cremation.

The atmosphere of the evening was rather depressing as neighbours and well-wishers started filling in one by one at about 4:30 pm. Eleven ambulances along with police vehicles escorting the convoy of ambulances transported the bodies from the hospital to the cremation ground.

The mourners were still in a state of shock and were very vulnerable as they could not contemplate the fact that such a sound, a happy and religious family with next to no problems neither in the family nor in their lives would meet such a spine-chilling end.

A large number of people from the locality who were seemingly shocked and sad about the whole incident were also present for the cremation ceremony. Some of the people were also seen breaking down. The police were seen controlling the public and media in order to ensure the maintenance of law and order at the spot and a peaceful adieu to the departed souls.

While investigating officials are pointing towards a spiritual angle in the commissioning of the mass suicide, relatives, neighbours and friends, still in shock and disbelief, are in denial.

Narayani Devi's one more son and daughter who lived at Kota in Rajasthan and Panipat in Haryana, respectively are said to be in shock.

The Bhatias had a grocery store and lived in an apartment on the first floor. They were in no financial trouble, as per friends and relatives. One account suggests they became deeply religious after an accident that left Lalit Bhatia mute.
