A 19-year-old Bolivian national, reportedly a member of an international drug cartel, was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) sleuths from the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) on Saturday. As much as 2.8 kg cocaine was seized from his possession.

The police said they had received a tip-off that Bolivian national Zhan Salagar Sergio Jie was carrying cocaine to India. A team of NCB officers then followed the suspect to the hotel where he had checked in after his arrival in the country.

On searching Jie's belongings, the officers found a packet of cocaine in the lower portion of the baggage. The accused has confessed to his crime, the police said.

During interrogation, Jie revealed that the packet was given to him by another Bolivian national, who wanted it to be delivered in Delhi. He added that he travelled from Bolivia to Sao Paulo by road on March 9 and then took a flight from there to Lome.

From Lome, he went to Addis Ababa, before finally arriving in Delhi. Earlier, he had also visited Dhaka in Bangladesh to deliver a consignment. A case in this regard has been registered and the whereabouts of drug handlers in both India and Bolivia are being ascertained.

The national Capital is not only a transit point for drug smuggling but is also a big market for party drugs. These drugs are mainly manufactured in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, and reach even the north-eastern states via Delhi.

According to a United Nation's (UN) report released last year, India is the transit point after Thailand, Malaysia, and Philippines, with the last stop being China and Israel. The UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has stated that smuggling of cocaine has increased in Asia.
