Usha Devi, a 50-year-old woman who had been running a tea stall opposite the Delhi BJP headquarters at Pt Pant Marg for the last three decades, was in for a rude shock on Thursday. The woman, who boasts of serving tea to BJP stalwarts like LK Advani, was thrown on to the streets outside the saffron party's Delhi office after the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) on Thursday demolished her make-shift stall, the only source of income for her family. BJP workers and even parliamentarian and state BJP president Manoj Tiwari, rushed to her aid.

When she raised a hue and cry, Tiwari immediately asked the NDMC officials to provide written orders to support the action they had taken against the tea vendor. In the absence of any proper order, the officials raised the demolished structure and left the place quietly.

The drama unfolded around 3.30 pm when NDMC officials arrived at Pt Pant Marg, demolished the temporary structure, lifted goods and other consumable items on to the truck.

To stop the NDMC moving away with her belonging, Devi lay in front of the NDMC truck. Witnessing the drama, a few BJP workers rushed to the spot and tried to stop NDMC officials from carrying out further action. Some office bearers even asked for the demolition order. Sensing the tense situation, NDMC officials called the police.

On noticing the police presence and the crowd, Tiwari, on his way to chair a monthly meeting, stopped at the tea stall and enquired about the incident. After a word with the woman and her family members, he assured them no injustice would be done. Tiwari then talked to the police officers present, who informed him that the NDMC was conducting the demolition.

Tiwari then asked for the copy of complaint against the stall, notice and demolition order from the NDMC officials, which they failed to produce. Then, in strong words, he asked them to either provide an order copy or erect the stall once again in 10 minutes. In absence of anything in writing, NDMC officials left the place allowing the woman to erect the stall once again.

Grateful for the intervention, with folded hands, Devi thanked everyone there, especially Tiwari, "Sahab, thank you so much. You saved us." Once the stall was erected, she offered tea to most present.
