After trying to woo voters with khichdi, the Delhi BJP reached out through dahi-choora (curd-flattened rice) on Sunday. This time the party eyed one of its trusted vote banks in the capital- the Purvanchalis by serving a popular regional dish to them marking the occasion of Makarsankranti.
Around 5,000 people belonging to eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar participated in the event organised by the local unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The city has around 40 lakh Purvanchalis that are considered one of the most significant vote bank by all the three parties— BJP, Congress, and Aam Aadmi Party. The community, by sheer number of votes it has in its kitty, has the power to sway the fate of any election. Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari, who is also a popular actor from the region, holds sizeable influence on the Purvanchali people.
Meanwhile, Tiwari who was the chief guest at the event held at North Avenue, reiterated the resolution taken by the party at its recently concluded national council meet. "At the national meet, under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we got to learn that General Elections are like fight between ideologies. For their personal gain , certain leaders are trying to form a weak government but we will form a strong government at the Centre which will always work for the betterment of the people," he said. Greeting people on the festival which is dedicated to sun god, he said, "I wish light falls on people's lives and it brightens up, removing all miseries and problems."
While addressing the party at the function, Union Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan highlighted the significance of sesame. "On this day people celebrate and eat sesame. It is naturally hot and brings warmth to the body. Hence in winters it is consumed by many families residing in Northern part of the country in their daily meals," he said.
Delhi MP and National Chairman - All India Confederation of SC/ST Organisations Dr Udit Raj also held an outreach programme for the Purvanchalis in the national capital. The leader served litti-chokha- another delicacy from the region, besides having an interactive session with children and youth belonging to the community.
