In what seems to be a last-minute push for the upcoming civic polls, the BJP-led municipal corporations of Delhi on Friday requested government departments to appoint a nodal officer in each of its buildings to prevent the outbreak of vector-borne diseases such as dengue and chikunguniya in the city.

The decision was taken at an internal coordination meeting held at the zonal office of the East Corporation. Representatives from government departments including the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and all government hospitals and educational institutions, among others, participated in the meeting.

Party sources also said that a senior-level officer would be appointed as a 'point person' in all government buildings in the Capital in order to check mosquito-breeding.

"The nodal officer will be required to keep a tab on the measures to be taken to keep the premises mosquito-free. He will be required to submit a weekly report on the area and coordinate with the corporation," said a spokesperson of the East Corporation.

With the decision, it seems the BJP is trying hard to impress voters, and preparing well in advance to prevent the situation before the humid season starts. The corporations and the AAP-led Delhi government had played a long blame game in 2016 before taking serious steps to contain the disease, while it had almost reached epidemic proportions.

Figures show the worse outbreak of chikunguniya with the city recording 5,293 cases — the highest ever in Delhi. Meanwhile in 2015, dengue took a toll, infecting 16,000 people and killing 60.

At the meeting, senior government officials also raised issues such as lack of routine fogging and enough fogging machines, which has so far remained a big hurdle in the prevention of dengue and chikunguniya.
