Political parties will be waiting with bated breath as the counting of votes for the Bawana by-election takes place on Monday. The power-packed polls, which witnessed the participation of eight candidates, is expected to be a triangular contest between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the Congress.

The voting for the election was held on August 23. The voting percentage, however, was just 45 per cent, lesser than for the election held in 2015, when the voting percentage was 61.83.

A win in this constituency, one of the largest in the city, would fix a seat for the respective party in the 70-member Delhi Assembly. While AAP has 65 MLAs in the Assembly, BJP has four, and Congress is yet to open its account.

Earlier this year, the BJP had won the Rajouri Garden by-poll with the Congress securing the second position. In a bid to capture the Bawana seat, the BJP has fielded Ved Prakash, who had won from the constituency in the 2015 election as an AAP candidate. He resigned from Assembly membership and went on to join the BJP in March this year, leading to the fresh election in the constituency.

AAP’s candidate is Ram Chandra, while Congress has placed its bet on former three-time MLA from Bawana, Surendra Kumar.

There are 2.94 lakh voters in Bawana, including 164,114 men, 130,143 women, and 25 third-gender voters. Voting was held peacefully in 379 polling stations across the Assembly constituency.

An EVM and 17 VVPAT devices had malfunctioned during the polling, but were replaced without hindrance to voting. The officials said multiple election taking place in the city in quick succession could be a factor for the low turnout in Bawana, adding turnout is “generally low” in by-polls.
