30-year-old Vipin Joshi, the eldest child in the family, had come to the national Capital in 2007 with the hope of making not just his life but the lives of his relatives back at a village in Uttarakhand more comfortable. His younger brother Mahesh followed him three years later and the two started living in the Saidulajab area of south Delhi. No one could have imagined that the journey would lead to a gut-wrenching end.

Vipin's body was found chopped and stored in a refrigerator at his friend's house in the adjacent lane in the area. Narrating his last moments with his brother, Mahesh said: "He came to Delhi in 2007 and I followed in 2010. My brother never picked up a fight with anyone or misbehaved. He had been working at the same place for the last 7-8 years."

Vipin had been working at the FIO Country Kitchen & Bar at the Garden of Five Senses. Mahesh, who works as a chef at another restaurant in Gururgram, usually has morning shifts, while Vipin used to work in the night shift.

"On Sunday, Vipin did not come home. I thought he must have been tired and decided to sleep at his friend's house. I woke up for my morning duty at 7.30 am and saw him coming. We exhanged some words and then I left. When I returned home later, he was not there. I was tired and went to sleep. After that, he didn't return."

Vipin is survived by his wife and a year-old daughter. His father died a few years ago while his mother lives in the village with his youngest brother. He has two sisters as well, who are married and settled in Uttarakhand.

From vegetable vendors to locals in the area, everyone remebered Vipin as a sensible, sober man.

Meanwhile, one of his cousins said he spoke to prime suspect Badal Mandal, a friend of Vipin, on Friday. "I called him and he told me that Vipin had last dropped him at the Saket Metro station and that he had mentioned about going to Haridwar or Rishikesh. When I inquired whether he knew anything about Vipin's whereabouts, he said he did not and disconnected the call. Later, his phone was switched off."
