Road accidents are nothing new in the national capital. Overspeeding, rash driving, overloaded commercial vehicles, poor road designs and liitle or no regard for law result in such accidents, found the Delhi government and the police in their annual assessment of such mishaps.

Two accidents in the past week alone, that killed one and injured two, has sparked the need to find solutions to the recurring problem.

In the first case, a speeding Fortuner allegedly hit two people in east Delhi's Pandav Nagar, early on Thursday. The victims were worked for a company that is to carry out construction work on NH-24.

According to the police, most accidents occur in the wee hours, as roads are vacant and motorists tend to overspeed and violate traffic norms.

Although the police claim that the number of fatal accidents has come down this year, the situation on the ground looks different. Awareness drives, action against violators, installing missing speed signs and improving the condition of roads are not implemented with urgency.

A senior police officer said, "This year, the fatalities have come down. We have urged the road-owning agencies to take up work where required. We have also told them to put up missing road signs. Besides, we take strict action against errant drivers. There are fewer cops on the road during the wee hours. We have been writing to the government to recruit more people but this has been a long-drawn process."

Besides, he said, the department is also updating a list of 129 accident-prone spots in the capital.

"Most of these places had turned into killer zones because of road engineering faults. We have been pursuing the road-owning agency to fix them. We were told that work on some of them have been taken up," the officer said.

The spots include ISBT Kashmere Gate, NH-8, Mahipalpur flyover, Dhaula Kuan crossing, Sanjay T-point (near Aerocity), Punjabi Bagh crossing, Britannia Chowk and RTR flyover, among others.
