Ayurveda seems to be finding more support among patients in the Capital and beyond.  According to doctors at Chaudhary Brahm Prakash Ayurved Charak Sansthan — one of the major ayurvedic hospitals in the Capital — there has been a major influx of patients flocking to their hospitals.

Doctors at this hospital claim that they had been receiving 1,000 patients per day on an average until last year. This has now reached 1,800 in April and has been increasing since. They also claim they are the first Ayurvedic hospital in India to see so many number of patients in a day.

“There has been a rise in the number of patients coming here after trying allopathic medicines for years,” says Doctor Vidula Gujjarwar, the Medical Superintendent of the hospital. “Even allopathic hospitals are referring their patients for some chronic diseases and illnesses as our treatments have very fewer side-effects and chances of recurrence,” she added.

The hospital is one of three ayurvedic hospitals in the Capital.

Coming to treatments, doctors at the hospital say that they  provide Basti (Oil Anema), bloodletting, fermentation and Panchkarma therapies. But their most renowned treatments, are leech therapy and Kshar Sutra therapy. Doctors here say that these treatments are a cure for anorectal diseases like fistula and piles and that there is no successful equivalent cure in allopathy.

“For our Kshar Sutra and leech therapy, patients come from far off places. These therapies have instant results and no side-effects. There has been a rise in post-chikungunya joint pain patients who after taking medicines for joint pains, come here for Agni Karma. Allopathy fails in Fistula, but we have a 90 percent no recurrence rate,” says Doctor Danish Javed, Clinical Registrar, Shalya (Surgery).

Some people here believe that ayurveda was able to cure them after treatment at allopathic hospitals failed. Sita Ram, 50, a security guard from Sagarpur, who has been visiting the ayurvedic hospital since last two months, is one of these people.

“After I started weekly visits for leech therapy, my wound has started to heal and it is less painful. They only charged Rs. 10 for the OPD card, which is so much better after the expensive allopathic treatment,” he said.
