Auto-rickshaw drivers in Delhi protest against extortion bid by police

Several auto-rickshaw drivers today protested against the Delhi police constables, after whose alleged extortion bid one Uday Chand, father of an auto-rickshaw driver had set himself on fire.

Around hundred auto drivers marched from Chattarpur Metro Station till Hauz Khas, office of South district's Deputy Commissioner of Police demanding immediate arrest of the errant constables and sought action against the SHO of Neb Sarai police station.

The agitating auto-rickshaw drivers claimed that such extortion by policemen is rampant in the city and if their demands are not fulfilled they will go on a strike.

Uday Chand, who reportedly set himself on fire on Saturday evening, suffered 85 per cent burn injuries and his condition is stated to be critical, doctors treating him at Safdarjung hospital said.

Police constables Raj Kumar and Surender Kumar were suspended and a departmental inquiry has been initiated into the matter after a criminal case was registered against them.

"The constables were questioned for around three hours today and their statements have been recorded. They were also sent to AIIMS Trauma Centre for a medical examination. Eyewitnesses have given different versions of the incident," a police officer said.

Police sources claim that one of the constables also tried to save Uday and injured himself in the attempt.
