The early emergence of dengue and chikungunya in Delhi has put the authorities on high alert. Civic bodies and the health department have shifted into preventive mode to avoid another major outbreak. The state health department has instructed hospitals to treat patients coming with fever-like symptoms at the earliest.

"They have been told to work on the capacity building of the doctors. All medical staff should be trained to treat the patients coming with dengue and chikungunya. This year all the guidelines have been issued early unlike previous years," said Dr SM Raheja, additional director general of health services (ADGHS).

Delhi has reported 79 cases of chikungunya and 24 cases of dengue so far, a report by South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) said, compared to only seven dengue and no chikungunya cases at this time last year. .

"We are now focussing on reporting of the cases. In 2015, the reporting of the cases started from September however it was pushed to May in 2016. This year, we have started it earlier. Our aim is to take all the preventive measures to fight with the vector-borne diseases," added Dr Raheja.

The civic body is all set to launch a mobile application for better monitoring of the disease. .

The inspections of households and other establishments by the Domestic Breeding Checkers (DBCs) will be put on record online.

According to a senior corporation official, the app is to bring transparency and effective monitoring. "The problem that we face every year is that many people don't allow DBCs to enter their houses for inspection. In such cases, the workers will now have the facility to mark the place with the due time and date on the app so that we can keep a live record of the same. This will help us maintain solid data," he said.

On Wednesday, Union Health Minister JP Nadda also reviewed the preparedness for dengue and chikungunya in all the states, and asked the states to mount aggressive campaigns to counter both.
