More than 10 women, on an average, were either raped or molested every day in the national Capital in the first month of 2018, a Delhi Police data accessed by DNA revealed. At least 350 women also fell victim to rape and molestation in January alone, with 141 cases of rape and 209 cases of molestation, according to the data.
Ironically, of the 141 registered cases of rape, only 90 have been solved. Even cases of molestation have seen only half of them being with the number standing at 106.

Further, 20 cases of abduction, 13 cases of dowry death, 43 cases of outraging the modesty of a woman have been reported. These numbers, however, haven’t seen a drastic rise than those recorded last year, but the number of solved cases with regard to certain crimes is lower this year. Of 20 cases of abduction, only two cases have been solved. Same with kidnapping cases with 14 of the 270 cases being solved.

On February 7, a Delhi University student video-graphed a man indulging in an obscene act while seated next to her in a bus. In a similar incident in November, a woman was molested on the terrace of a building in Connaught Place, where she had gone to make a phone call. He later snatched her mobile phone and fled. Both the cases remain unsolved till now. Most women do not even think of these incidents as a form of assault but gradually they are reporting the matter to the police.

When compared with the number of rape cases registered in January 2017, of the 144, only 97 were solved. The work-out ratio in connection with molestation cases was somewhat similar to this year’s. Of the 238 cases, only 105 were solved. The work-out case percentage with regard to kidnapping was also very low and only 26 cases were solved out of the 287 registered. In January last year, out of 21 cases of abduction only two remained solved.

Senior police officers said the police is taking all the necessary steps in connection with the security and safety of women in the national Capital. They urged women to make complete use of the newly re-launched Himmat application, which has an emergency option through which the police will immediately be informed. "Cases pertaining to women have always been given priority and swift action has been taken. From time to time even police officers are trained with regard to gender sensitisation," said a police official.
