Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who does not hold any portfolio, now wants to head the law department of his government. The change of approach comes after the AAP government lost various important legal battles with then Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung leading to huge embarrassment for the party. As a result, sources close to the Chief Minister said, Kejriwal has expressed his wish to take over the law portfolio, which is currently headed by his deputy Manish Sisodia.

Furthermore, sources added, Kejriwal wants the law portfolio as he does not want to lose the legal battle with new Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal. He is gearing up for confrontation with the new L-G and wants to ensure that the party does not face embarrassment this time. Already Sisodia has set the tone for confrontation with the L-G. The Delhi Deputy CM issued an order, where he has stated that if Lieutenant governor seeks any legal advice, then the file should be first cleared by him. (Sisodia)

DNA accessed the order copy issued by Sisodia that states, "No legal advice shall be given by the law department without the approval of Law Minister. No instruction either verbal or written shall be issued by any officer of Law department without approval of the Law Minister. If any file or any instructions are received by any officer from Lieutenant Governor or Honourable Lieutenant Governor, the same shall immediately be put to the Law Minister."

Meanwhile Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has alleged that lately the L-G has been acting against their government by leaking information to the public. Kejriwal also stated that now he wants to personally monitor the AAP government's appeal in the Supreme Court against the Delhi High court verdict declaring the Lieutenant Governor the administrative head of the National Capital Territory.

Sources say that Kejriwal has also planned to fight a long legal battle in 'office of profit' case against his 21 MLAs. The Election Commission has concluded the hearing on an office of profit case against 21 AAP MLAs who were appointed parliamentary secretaries by Kejriwal and will announce their decision by the month-end. These 21 AAP lawmakers are facing prospects of disqualification in the order expected in the coming days.

Kejriwal and other AAP leaders will also face trial in a criminal defamation case filed against them by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.

Analysis

Arvind Kejriwal  does not want to lose his 21 MLAs after the party’s debacle in the MCD polls and he believes leading the crucial law department will help prevent that. His deputy Manish Sisodia will take care of education and health.
