In a bid to provide basic sanitation facilities for those living in JJ clusters of the national capital, the Delhi government will inaugurate 12 toilet clusters across the city on Sunday.

Officials in the government said that while the complexes have been constructed in seven assembly constituencies and will be inaugurated by Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal. They will serve over 10,000 people in slum clusters in Delhi.

According to senior officials in Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), the complexes will have a total of 500 seats taking the total toilet seat count in JJ clusters to 5,000. The Delhi government had announced its intention to provide 10,000 toilet seats before March 2017.

As per a DUSIB survey, there are at least 259 open defecation spots in Delhi. “There is no supply of water, leave alone a hygienic way to relieve ourselves. Our family members have to completely depend on the forest area to attend the nature’s call,” said Shivam, 28, resident of a slum cluster in Rajendra Nagar. “The DUSIB department is also focused towards ensuring that it provides a hygienic sanitation facility for those living in JJ clusters. Apart from constructing new toilets, the department is also repairing and upgrading the existing ones. We have installed taps in 80% of the toilets and regular cleaning is done,” said a DUSIB official.

The toilets have been constructed in Timarpur, Wazirpur, Model Town, Moti Nagar, Matiala, Rajinder Nagar and Jangpura. According to DUSIB officials, there are close to 100 slum clusters in the national capital which lack proper toilet facility, leaving women and children from the area to either the defecate in the open or walk long distances to attend nature’s call. Women say that they travel in groups when going to attend nature’s call for safety reasons. “Drunkards often wander around; animals also are a safety hazard. This makes the area dangerous for small children. We don’t allow girls to relive themselves at night, at dawn too they are usually accompanied by someone from the family,” said Saroj, resident of the Model Town slum cluster.

The Delhi government plans to construct two lakh public toilets across Delhi of which 1.5 lakh will be in slum clusters.
