Eyes are the windows to the soul. With this message as the main premise, an art exhibition showing portraits of eyes of famous personalities, including Mother Teresa, Rabindranath Tagore started at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGNCA) on Saturday. The six-day long exhibition titled 'Eyes Say It All', was inaugurated by former President Dr Pranab Mukherjee.

Artist Dipak Kumar Ghosh has exhibited 60 portraits of popular faces like Swami Vivekananda, APJ Abdul Kalam, Albert Einstein, Sri Ramakrishna, reflecting different phases of life. Ghosh has used charcoal, acrylic and water colours in his creations that have been influenced by people's emotions and expressions. He says that his work focuses on eyes as they convey a certain intimacy, a history that nothing else can hold. "I believe that the eyes are the reflection of the soul. Even in the briefest moments, they can speak volumes," he said.

The theme eyes have been encircled by a number of pairs that reflect various facets of a person, from exuberance to a simple smile, profound grief to mellowed agony, from being exhausted to boredom.

Talking about what led him to bring alive the depth of eyes in his paintings, he said, "Every stroke in every work of art is important to the bigger picture and I invest a lot of time and effort in my creations.

"While portraying the sketches of Osho and Sri Aurobindo, my studio plunged into darkness. This is when I noticed the eyes that stared back at me and I could almost feel their presence in the room. The experience was otherworldly and gave me a great sense of satisfaction," the artist said.

Ghosh turned towards pencil and charcoal full time to be able to portray the world through the eyes of those he came across, he also works with other tools such as acrylics, paint and oil pastels.
