Another sewer mishap claims 3 lives in Noida

Police are on the lookout for the contractor who is on the run

In another case of workers dying in spectic tanks, three men died of asphyxiation, one after the another, while cleaning a septic tank without any safety gear on Thursday in sector 110, Noida.

According to police, the incident took place at around 4 pm near BDS market where sewer cleaning work was in progress. One man had entered the sewer manhole in order to clean it and did not return for almost 20 minutes. Two more men then entered the manhole to search for him.

"The locals didn't see the workers coming out of the septic tank for a long time so they informed us. A rescue team reached the spot and it took them around two hours to get the bodies out of the tank," said Arun Singh, Superintendent of Police (City), Noida.

Police said the he bodies were identified as Rajesh (27), Vikas (26) and Ravindra (26), residents of slum cluster in Noida's sector-9. Later, they were rushed to the district hospital where they were declared dead.

According to officials, the three workers were employed by a contractor named Somveer, who is currently absconding. "We have gathered information and the contractor for whom they worked are said to be absconding. We are on a look out for him. A committee has been set up and the reports will in a week and strict action will be taken against the guilty," said Rakesh Mishra, additional chief executive officer (ACEO), Noida authority.

The authority also announced compensation of Rs 10 lakhs to the deceaseds' families.

The incident comes days after the Delhi High Court had sought a time-bound implementation of the procedure for cleaning sewers and septic tanks.

A bench comprising Justices S Ravindra Bhat and Sunil Gaur was informed by the Delhi government that the Lieutenant Governor has recently set up a committee to examine various measures for the implementation of 'The Prohibition of Employment of Manual Scavenger and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013.
