Last month, another JNU professor was arrested on charges of sexually harassing nine women students. He was later granted bail by a city court.
The police said that they received a complaint from the Social Sciences Department student on Friday, following which a case was registered.
The FIR was lodged on charges of assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty, criminal intimidation, and word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman, they said.
The student told the police that the professor had been harassing her for a long time but when the situation got out of hand, she approached the police.
The Atul Johri case
Last month, the Atul Johri case made national headlines with many students and activists demanding his arrest.
However, Johri got a quick bail despite massive protests.
Duty magistrate Ritu Singh granted bail to Johri and had directed him to furnish a bail bond of Rs 30,000 for each of the eight FIRs registered against him.
"It is settled proposition of the law that bail, not jail is the rule except where the circumstances are suggestive of fleeing of accused from justice or thwarting the cause of justice or repetition of offences," the court had said.
It took into account the fact that the statement of the complainant had already been recorded by a judicial magistrate.
"I'm a victim of politics," Johri had told the court during the hearing.
In his bail plea, Johri had said that in compliance with certain UGC guidelines with regard to compulsory attendance and leave pattern, he had sent an e-mail on February 27 to certain students, including the complainant (student), warning them against their irregular attendance pattern.
"In order to ensure that the applicant (Johri) is unable to take any action against them owing to their attendance issues, the complainant (student) herein in connivance with certain other female students, while levelling upon various frivolous allegations, got the present false FIR registered against the applicant," the bail plea said.
