Rajesh Bharti, leader of the ‘Kranti gang’, who was killed in a police encounter on Saturday, often challenged the cops to catch him and his gang members by leaving a pamphlet identifying them, to show their dominance in Delhi-NCR area after committing crimes.

Bharti carried a reward of Rs 2 lakh i.e., one lakh each from Delhi and Haryana Police on his arrest. He was wanted for a number of cases of murder, attempt to murder, extortion and Arms Act. His three associates were also killed in the encounter.

Bharti, a resident of Jind, Haryana, made his way in the crime world at the age of 11, after he murdered his father for which he spent a few months at a juvenile home.

In March 2011, Bharti had kidnapped a Delhi University student and had taken a ransom of Rs 35 lakh.

Bharti also had strong links with gangster Manoj Morkheri, who was once a top criminal. Morkheri was arrested in 2013 along with his two associates, Vivek and Praveen, following an encounter in outer Delhi’s Alipur.

According to sources, Bharti called his targets to extort money and boasted about his links with the likes of Chhota Shakeel. Delhi Police are also probing if Bharti was booked earlier under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, 1999 (MCOCA).

Police said Bharti’s gang started as car jackers, along the Delhi-Haryana road and later graduated to kidnapping for ransom and extortion. The gang has been committing crime in the Capital from the last seven to eight months, while provoking the Delhi Police to arrest them if they could. Sanjeet Vidrohi, who was Bharti’s close associate and considered to be his right hand, carried a reward of Rs one lakh on his arrest.

Bharti and Vidrohi had run away from the Haryana Police custody in February 2017. The third deceased was identified as Umesh Don, who carried a reward of Rs 50,000, and the fourth one as Viresh Rana.

The injured associate of Bharti gang has been identified as Kapil, who is undergoing treatment.
