Two years after Mohammed Akhlaq was beaten to death on suspicion of consuming beef in his house, all 15 accused in the case, who are out on bail, have secured contractual jobs with Dadri's National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC). This has been done with the help of the local BJP MLA Tejpal Singh Nagar.

Speaking to DNA, Nagar said that he had facilitated the recruitment of the accused after a meeting with senior NTPC officials this week.

"I had met officials of the NTPC earlier this week regarding jobs being provided to the accused. Actually, some of these accused were already working with private firms at NTPC, from where they were sacked following allegations levelled at them of murdering Mohammed Akhlaq. Now, they have assured me that those who had lost their jobs will be reinstated within the next two months and others will have to prove their worth," said Nagar.

Nagar also confirmed that the family of Ravin Sisodia, one of the murder accused, who had died in jail of multiple organ failure, would soon get Rs 8 lakh compensation.

"I had been working in favour of the families of the accused as they are innocent. The government has assured a compensation of Rs 8 lakh of which Rs 5 lakh will be a single payment, to the boy (Ravin Sisodia) who died. His wife will get a job in a primary school within a month and the rest of the money will come from collections made at the local level along with other perks," Nagar added.

According to NTPC officials, the employment offer is part of the company's scheme to offer jobs to people affected by its projects in Bishahra, located in the vicinity of the NTPC plant.

"Contractual jobs have been offered to many residents of Bishahra because it is the NTPC's policy to give jobs to all project-affected persons. It has nothing to do with Akhlaq's lynching. The jobs are completely based on qualifications," said an NTPC spokesperson.

When contacted, the son of Mohammed Akhlaq, Danish, said that they did not have any problems with people finding work outside to support their families, but at least justice should be served.

THE MURDER

In September 2015, Mohammed Akhlaq and his son Danish were dragged out of their house and attacked by a mob on suspicion that they had slaughtered a cow and stored its meat in their house. Akhlaq succumbed to his injuries.  The accused had all secured bail over the last six months.
