Phone calls have not stopped for Joseph K Mathew, a male nurse at the AIIMS Trauma center since yesterday morning after the UPSC results came out. The 30-year-old nurse from Kerela has bagged 574th rank in the exam in his fifth attempt since 2012.

"I had been preparing hard since last few years and had even sat for the UPSC interview/Mains in 2014 where I got 180 marks," said Joseph, who has not stopped smiling since the results were announced. "The work as a Trauma nurse in the ICU is very hectic as we also do 12 hour night shifts for six days every month and eight hours day shift otherwise," he added.

This year over 15,000 people gave the Union Public Service Commission Preliminary Exam and out of which 3,000 were selected for Mains and only 1,099 got selected finally.

Joseph hails from Kottayam in Kerela where his father was a daily laborer and mother is a housewife. He asked his father to stop working after he joined AIIMS in 2010 as a staff nurse.

"I used to read all the major newspapers every day. There were days when work was so hectic that I could not study at all, but then I always compensated it by studying extra on weekends. I also took six months crash course in 2012 but mostly I studied on my own," said he.

Senior staff from the hospital including the Medical Superintendent and the HoDs of different departments have been visiting Joseph in the 'Nurse Assistance Room', some with kind words and others with garlands and bouquets and some with numbers of IAS officers they know.

One of the doctors commented, "Now you have become our boss too"

He now awaits his score which will come in the next 3 days and the cut off from it will also help him decide the services he gets to join.

"Despite the office work and his studies, he never missed out on get-togethers and our hangouts. He also maintained good relationships and friendships," said his fellow colleague and friend, Ancil V Rajan.

Another nurse, Theresa Joseph, who is pursuing M.Sc. In Nursing from Trivandrum Medical college cleared the exam with 117th rank.
