An over-burdened All India Institute for Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has decided to send family members of staffers, who wish to avail maternity services, to private hospitals.

A notification by the medical institute, issued on May 1, has asked employees living in the National Capital Region (NCR) and needing maternity services to visit private hospitals. They will later be reimbursed for the cost incurred.

Doctors and their families avail treatment in the institute at a concessional rate under the Employees Health Scheme (EHS). According to sources, the increasing number of maternity cases in the last few years has been troubling the administration.

"Over the years, the number of maternity cases among EHS beneficiaries has been increasing steadily without any commensurate augmentation of infrastructure to support these services, particularly the labour room and the maternity OT complex. As a result, the EHS beneficiaries have been facing difficulties while availing these services," AIIMS Medical Superintendent Dr DK Sharma said.

On February 4 this year, a 28-year-old AIIMS nurse, Rajbir Kaur, had died after delivery through cesarean section. Kaur had reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest during the surgery. The institute later terminated the services of a senior resident doctor and initiated disciplinary action against three others in connection with the tragic case.

The country's premier medical institute witnesses 8,000-10,000 patients on a daily basis. According to sources, in the last few months, complaints regarding lack of services at the maternity block have flooded the authorities. After repeated complaints to the administration, it was decided that some of the traffic will be diverted to private hospitals.

"We have decided to divert EHS beneficiaries living in NCR to private hospitals. We will reimburse them later, as per the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) rates," Dr Sharma added.

Appreciating the move, senior doctors in the hospital said it would take some burden off the medical institute. "It is a good move. The institute is already over-burdened with patients and the maternity department was among the worst. If the institute reimburses staffers as per the CGHS rate, there will be no problem," a senior AIIMS doctor said.
