Ahead of the municipal polls in Delhi, the BJP-ruled South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has promised providing gas pipelines to around 10,000 to 15,000 households in west Delhi.

In the programme declared in haste, the South Corporation Mayor inaugurated a project to ensure supply of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) to seven colonies including Ashok Nagar, Gopal Nagar, Pratap Nagar, Asha Park, Usha Parka and ten blocks of Fateh Nagar.

The civic agency has requested the Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) officers to fast-track the work.

"The project will benefit almost 20,000 families in the area. We have requested IGL officers to lay the pipelines on a war-footing such that connections could be provided within two months of registration," said Sharma.

The project, he said, will help provide a safe and uninterrupted supply of cooking gas to residents. Besides, it will cut down the hassle of booking a cylinder and the hazards that are associated with it.

While residents are happy to hear about the project, they are apprehensive if it would be implemented in time.

"There are many projects which have been inaugurated but never implemented. While piped gas is certainly a better option for domestic usage than an LPG cylinder, we are just hoping that the connections are provided soon," said Rehman Sheikh, a resident of Fateh Nagar.

Others too hailed the project citing long delays in booking of LPG cylinders an issue and hoping to get some respite.

"I would like to get the connection, as it would be much safer to use than a cylinder. We have had two incidents of cylinder bursts from nearby colonies," said Rekha Malik, a resident of Ashok Nagar.

The civic body has given road-cutting permission to the company for laying the pipelines already. Registration work has started in these colonies too. "Only an amount of Rs 1,000 is to be paid for registration, while the rest of the amount of Rs 5,000 can be cleared off in installments over two years," said a senior official.
