Station House Officer of Miyanwali police station was on Sunday sent to district lines after a departmental enquiry was initiated against him for allegedly assaulting six men publicly, last month. The action was taken after a video of the assault went viral on social media. The victims include three brothers, whose father alleged that the police demanded money to release his sons, after which he complained to the Commissioner of Police.

According to the police, the complainant, Mahavir Singh Sainy, lives with his family in Paschim Vihar area, with his three sons - Sachin, a tax assistant, Pankaj, who works in Excise Department and Akash, a college student.
According to Sainy, it was on January 21, when his two sons with their three friends Nitin, Deepak and Rahul were waiting for Pankaj to arrive near a petrol pump, from where they were supposed to head to a party.

It was then that three cops arrived on the spot and asked these five men why they were standing there. An argument followed after which the policemen started thrashing the men. The victims alleged that soon the SHO Miyanwali, Gurnam Singh, also arrived with more men and at least eight policemen started thrashing them.

The act was also caught in a CCTV camera installed nearby. The victims alleged that they were then taken to a police station and were again assaulted over false allegations of misbehaving and creating a ruckus in public.

When Sainy came to know about the incident, he rushed to the police station, where he alleged that money was demanded for the release of his sons and their friends. It was only after the elderly man lodged a complaint against the cops that SHO Miyanwali was sent to district lines and an inquiry was initiated, said a senior police officer.

The victims also alleged that the Investigating Officer (IO) demanded Rs 3 lakh to release them. They alleged that they were not told the purpose of detaining and later they gave Rs 25,000 to the IO after which they were released.
