Hours after the results of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) elections declared Left bloc as winners, clashes erupted on the campus. Members from the united Left alliance and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) alleged that they were beaten up by the rival parties.

The JNUSU results were declared on Sunday amid violence on Saturday which led to the suspension of counting for more than 12 hours.

The latest incident occurred on wee hours of Monday outside the Jhelum hostel. The Left alleged that ABVP supporters were beating up their supporters to avenge the defeat. JNUSU President N Balaji said they saw ABVP people thrashing a student outside Sutlej hostel. "They were chasing the victim towards the lawns outside Jhelum. He was also lynched had we not intervened and saved him. In fact, they threatened us and tried to attack us too. We, somehow, managed to take the student to the ambulance," he said.

Meanwhile, ABVP denied the allegations, claiming that they were the ones who were attacked by Left "ideology". "It was All India Students Association (AISA) who attacked us. This is in continuation with the violence of Saturday when the members stopped counting midway to influence the election results," said Saurabh Sharma, ABVP JNU unit head. "The AISA is roaming in the campus armed with sticks and rods. They attacked our key member Sujal, who was beaten up on Saturday too. We have filed a complaint and are living in the shadow of fear," claimed Sharma.

Meanwhile, Devendra Arya, DCP, South West district said, "Early on Monday morning around 3 am PCR calls about a scuffle between students in JNU were received. Subsequently, we have had a discussion with university authorities, students, university professors. Complaints have been received at the Vasant Kunj North police station. Legal action is being taken on merit. The situations under control now and Normal. Police arrangements are in place." The DCP confirmed that a total of five FIRs based on the complaints of both the parties have been registered under sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 506 ( punishment for criminal intimidation), 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint), 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention).
