The Delhi Police have arrested Vijay, a district-level budding cricketer known by the name Dhoni for copying the player's style, for his involvement in a murder last year. The Delhi University graduate has been evading arrest by changing his locations and cell phone numbers frequently, police said.

According to senior police officers, Dhoni was arrested by a team of special staff, Dwarka, led by sub-inspector Naveen Kumar.

On July 17 last year, a man was rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre with grievous injuries. He was later identified as Aakash, who succumbed to his injuries. His brother Sunny said that local criminals — Vijay alias Dhoni, Vishal, Ajeet, Lakshman, Gaurav, and Deepak — assaulted his brother with iron rods and sticks. During the probe, Dhoni and his brother Vishal managed to abscond while others were nabbed.

Dwarka DCP Shibesh Singh said it that it has been ascertained that the criminals were active members of the infamous Gaurav Jhareda gang. Analysis of call details of several numbers linked to the absconding members were scanned to get a clue regarding their whereabouts.

"Surveillance was also put in place and several persons were interrogated. The duo had switched off their mobile phones. Raids were conducted at all possible hideouts in Delhi-NCR and Haryana but the accused were constantly changing their locations and mobile numbers. On Sunday, acting on a tip-off that that both the accused would come near the Dwarka Metro station on a scooter to meet someone, a trap was laid and both were nabbed," the DCP said.

Interrogation revealed that Dhoni was fond of cricket and represented school and college teams at district level. He wanted to be a cricketer and was a fan of ex-Indian cricket team captain MS Dhoni.

"He adopted the cricketer's and soon was known as Dhoni in the area. But when he could not enter the Delhi State Cricket Team, he joined his brother, who was already an active member of the Gaurav Jhareda gang. In 2014, he and Vishal were arrested with Gaurav Jhareda in a case of attempt to murder in Delhi Cantonment. He along with his associates assaulted and seriously injured one Amit alias Suraj Bhan in July 2016. A few days later, both the accused brutally murdered Aakash using iron rods and sticks with the help of their associates following an argument," the officer added.
