The President of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) youth wing in Delhi's Jafrabad, and three of his accomplices, were arrested for robbery on Sunday, and more than Rs 16 lakh of booty, along with weapons, were recovered from their possession. The four had robbed a man off Rs 25 lakh on gunpoint in the Maujpur area last Sunday, police said.
According to the police, on March 12, a robbery was reported from the Krishna Gali in Maujpur, where bike-borne assailants fled with the victim's bag containing Rs 25 lakh, mobile phone, and other valuables. The miscreants even fired shots to scare the public and injured one of the passersby.
One of the accused, who was later identified as Nadeem alias Furkan, 22, was nabbed on the spot when he fell off his bike. His associates managed to escape.
"A case was registered at the Jafrabad police station under sections of robbery and Arms Act. During questioning, Furkan told police that he was the leader of the gang and was a wanted criminal in two cases of robbery,"a senior police officer said.
Then, acting on a tip-off, a police team nabbed the other accused, identified as Jitender alias Johny, 27, a tantrik by profession, Mohammad Yusuf alias Faisal, 19, Naved, 22, and his brother Najeeb, 25, the President of the AAP youth wing in Jafrabad.
"Besides the money, a country-made pistol and a stolen motorcycle were recovered from them. The robbed bag contained PAN card and other important documents of the victim were also recovered," the officer said.
Police said the gang was involved in more than 20 other cases of robbery and snatching in Civil Lines, Bada Hindu Rao, Seelampur, Jafrabad , Dilshad Garden, and Pushta Usmanpur areas.
