The ongoing political drama over the Metro fare hike continued with the Aam Aadmi Party leaders staging a protest outside the Union Urban Development Ministry at Nirman Bhawan, on Friday. The Delhi Police detained party workers as well as senior leaders including Delhi Social Welfare Minister Rajendra Pal Gautam during the protest.

The gheraoing of the ministry came close on the heels of the Metro Fare Satyagraha launched by the AAP on Wednesday. Party members and volunteers protested against the revised fares rolled out by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation(DMRC) on Tuesday, across different metro stations on Wednesday and Thursday as part of the ‘satyagraha’. The fares were increased despite vehement opposition by the Delhi city government, which also led to a tug of war between the city government and the Centre. This is for the second time in a year that the fares have been increased. The DMRC had increased fares in May earlier.

Meanwhile, the ruling party of Delhi decided to take their protest outside the houses of seven MPs from the capital, all of whom are from the Bharatiya Janata Party. The AAP members have termed this the “second phase” of the Metro Fare Satyagraha.

According to an AAP leader, they will launch the protest outside the house of Union Minister Harsh Vardhan on Saturday. In the following days, they plan to take their agitation to residences of other MPs including Maheish Girri, Udit Raj, Ramesh Bidhuri, Parvesh Verma, Meenakshi Lekhi, and Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari.

The Delhi Metro Commuters Association, a volunteer organisation also protested outside the Metro Bhawan on Barakhamba road here on Friday.
