Responding to the suggestion of Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri to give Rs 3,000 crore per annum to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to prevent the proposed fare hike, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has agreed to give Rs 1,500 crore. The decision was announced in a series of tweets by AAP spokesperson Nagendar Sharma.

Sharma said on Sunday that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had responded to "every point" in the letter written by Puri, in which he had given the Rs 3,000 crore suggestion. Emphasising that the Delhi government was willing to take over the Metro and provide an efficient transport system, if the Centre agreed, Sharma also offered a matching grant of Rs 1,500 crore.

The AAP government had last week sought the Centre's intervention in preventing the new fares from seeing the light of the day. It had written a letter to Puri, urging him to exercise the power vested in him as urban development minister and direct the DMRC to hold back the new tariffs.

Refusing to back the AAP government, Puri had written a letter to Kejriwal, asking if his government was willing to provide a grant of Rs 3,000 crore, following which it could constitute a new fare fixation committee and the fare hike could be rolled back. He even gave a detailed break up of the total amount required by DMRC to keep the Metro chugging as efficiently.

Puri stated that the total grants-in-aid required in the next five years starting from 2017-18 till 2021-22 would be Rs 3,040 crore, 3,616 crore, 3,318 crore, 3,150 crore and 2,980 crore, respectively, that would go towards clearing off its loan, depreciation for replacements, and operational expenses, etc.
