Amidst AAP government's ongoing fight with Delhi Lt Governor Najeeb Jung, party MLA Adarsh Shastri on Tuesday sought a constitutional amendment to empower state assemblies to impeach Governors and Lt Governors.

Through a resolution, Shastri demanded amendments to Article 155 and 156 of the Constitution which deals with the appointment and term of office of the Governor's post.

"Legislative assemblies should have powers to impeach Governors, Lt Governors. I have demanded that assembly passes this resolution asking Parliament to amend Articles 155 and 156 of the Constitution," Dwarka MLA Shastri said.

Speaking to reporters, Shastri later said that he wanted to "make a point" and had merely echoed the views of the Sarkaria Commission.

"Various benches have hinted at a revamp of the federal structure of the Constitution. The Sarkaria Commission stated so. I have merely echoed the views of the Commission. Let us pass a resolution asking Parliament to review the recommendations of the Commission," he said.

Shastri, who is the grandson of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, stressed that more than the "question of having the authority to amend", it was the "authority to table this resolution".

"It's not a question of amending because the authority lies solely with Parliament of India. We want to tell Parliament that as a state legislature and any other state in the country we feel that the power should rest with the Assembly," he said.
