Facebook and WhatsApp landed Roshan, the domestic help who smothered and robbed a Lajpat Nagar woman on Tuesday, in the cops' net on Wednesday. The accused was active on social media sites by the name of Balram.

Roshan, along with Shesh Narain Rawat alias Karan and three other men, had smothered Sarita Jain, 53, before fleeing with jewellery worth Rs 25 lakh and Rs 10 lakh in cash. He had been hired recently. Jain lived with her husband Manak Lal and their son. The other servant, Rajan, was left tied up. The robbery and murder came to light around 3 pm, when Lal returned home to find his wife unconscious, the servant tied up, and the house ransacked.

The family had not verified Roshan's credentials with the police. "If the family had verified the domestic staffer with the Delhi Police, we could have nabbed the accused easily. Unfortunately for us, the only clue we had was the CCTV footage from the nearby cameras," DCP (South-East) Romil Baaniya said.

The agent from whom Roshan was hired also could not provide his correct address. "The family got in touch with the agency through Just Dial and other such advertisements. They did not check the license of the agency or its previous records," Baaniya added.

The agent, however, helped the police by giving details of Roshan's Facebook profile and WhatsApp. This lead proved crucial as Roshan's WhatsApp was constantly active even after the commission of the crime. He was consequently traced in Noida, Sector 27, and nabbed. During interrogation, Roshan told the police that they did not want to kill Jain and had just taped her mouth, but unfortunately, she suffocated.
