8-year-old kid crushed while celebrating puja

The excitement of children to witness the Saraswati Puja visarjan turned ugly for a family in the city. An eight-year old boy was crushed under the wheels of a tempo while he was walking to be a part of the festivities near his residence in South-West Delhi's Dwarka area on Thursday night. The errant driver of the tempo had abandoned the vehicle at the spot and ran away. Later, he was traced and arrested by the police.

According to the family of the deceased, the procession for Saraswati visarjan was being carried out in the area when Ankush and his elder sister were outside the house at around 9:30 pm.

"The children had gone out because they wanted to watch the Saraswati Puja procession. He was the only son in the family. His parents are inconsolable. They are not even in a condition to eat or speak," said Sanjeev Kumar, the deceased's uncle.

Locals and passersby who were present at the location revealed that the impact of the accident was such that the child's head was completely crushed.

"I was walking when I saw the Eicher Tempo take a U-turn. It headed towards the child and crushed him. I was in a state of shock when I saw the child. The tempo driver was driving rashly," said an eyewitness.

Ankush was rushed to a nearby hospital. The doctors declared that the kid was brought dead. Ankush was a student of class-I at MBD school. His father Ram Kishore works as a driver. The family hails from Begussarai in Bihar.

A case of rash and negligent driving causing death has been registered by the police. The accused driver Hari Prasad was later arrested by the police. He left the vehicle and ran away from the spot to evade arrest.

In another incident two boys sustained minor injuries after their private school van met with an accident near Lovely Chowk area in Dwarka. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon around 12:30 pm. There were fifteen children in the van who were being taken to school. "The van was carrying more passengers than the capacity. The children studied at the Central School. While two of the injured boys were discharged after preliminary treatment, the remaining 13 carried on with the school," said DCP South-West, Surender Kumar. The accused driver Rahul was arrested by the police.
