An eight-year-old boy died after he fell inside a pit at a park in Outer Delhi's Avantika area on Tuesday night. Abdul Khalid was playing in the park along with his friends when the incident took place. Family members alleged that there was no sign board near the dug up pit nor was the area marked 'dangerous' by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to whom the land belongs too.

Abdul Khalid had gone to the park to play cricket along with his friends. The area is a barren land which belongs to the DDA and had been dug up for months.

"The park belongs to them and that pit has been dug up for around four months now. Since the rains, it was filled up and my child fell and drowned. Neither was there any board nor was it covered with barbed wire," said Muhammad Mustafa, father of the child.

"Based on the complaint given by the father a case of death, due to negligence under section 304A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), has been registered at Vijay Vihar police station. The post-mortem was conducted and the viscera samples have been preserved. Prime facie it appears that he died due to drowning," said Deputy Commissioner of Police, Rohini, Rishipal Singh.

Around 4:30pm the children were playing cricket in the park. While Khalid was taking a catch he dived and his clothes got dirty. One of his friends Sajid who was also present in the park revealed that Khalid went near the pit to clean his clothes. While he was cleaning his clothes one of his legs slipped and he fell inside the pit. Khalid called out to his friends to help him but they were unsuccessful and left the park. Since they were scared they did not reveal the incident to anyone.

Around 8 pm, family members panicked and started searching for him. Later, friends told his uncle Muhammad Muzzafar that he had fallen in the pit. His uncle jumped in the pit and after searching for him finally recovered his body. He was declared brought dead at the hospital.

The park has been dug up at places and later another dug up pit was covered with barbed wires. Several calls made to the DDA officials went unanswered.
