The Customs officials at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) have seized eight kilograms gold, and a Japanese national, an Air India (AI) staffer, and a passenger have been arrested in this regard.

The seizures were made over a period of two days, Saturday and Sunday, after the Customs sleuths received intelligence inputs and started keeping a hawk-eye vigil at the green channel of the airport.

"A Japanese national, who had arrived from Hong Kong, was intercepted and asked to cooperate in frisking. During the checking, as much as 4 kg gold cut into pieces and bars was recovered from his luggage. When questioned, he could not provide a satisfactory answer and was arrested," a senior Customs officer said.

In another incident, a passenger coming from Dubai by an Emirates flight was intercepted at the green channel. "His movements seemed suspicious. He was thoroughly frisked and nearly 2 kg gold was seized from his possession. It also emerged during questioning that he was supposed to hand over the gold to an AI security personnel, who was also arrested later. Further investigation is underway," the officer added.

In the third incident, more than a kg of gold, concealed in electronic items in the form of tiny pieces, was seized. It was hidden in items such as extension board, trimmer, and bulbs. The gold was concealed ingeniously in these appliances.

Apart from this, 620 gram gold was seized from a passenger coming from Italy and 400 gram from another passenger, who was hiding the metal in his rectum, the officer said.
