A group of men attempted to rob a Malviya Nagar family on Sunday, after gaining entry into their home by posing as Income-Tax (I-T) officials. The family members, however, got suspicious and called their neighbours, who thrashed the accused and handed over six of them to the police. One accused managed to flee.

The incident took place in the afternoon. "The accused were identified as Mitesh Kumar, 40, Naunhyal, 45, Yogesh, 32, Govind, 45, Amit Aggarwal, 35, and Parvinder, 21. The absconding man has been identified as Kailash. They had extorted Rs 20 lakh from the complainant and put it in the Tata Safari car in which they came. The car has been recovered," a senior police officer said.

The officer added Kailash drove away in a Honda City car, which had been brought to the spot as well. The seven men showed their fake ID cards and entered the house. They then told the residents to surrender their mobile phones and gather in one room.

"According to the complainant, the accused locked all doors and windows, and started collecting jewellery and cash. They took Rs 20 lakh in cash from the safe and heaped all valuables at one place. They told the family that the "raid" was being conducted following a charge of tax evasion worth Rs 20 crore. The victims, however, became suspicious," a senior official said. They then sought help from neighbours, who broke into the house and confronted the accused. "Seeing a number of locals, the accused confessed that they intended to rob the family. The locals then thrashed these men and handed them over to the police. One accused, however, managed to flee from the house," the police said. The accused told the police that they were inspired by Akshay Kumar starrer 'Special 26' movie. Police are now trying to ascertain whether the gang has been involved in other such incidents.
