The Noida police have booked five Amity University students for ragging, after they were accused of beating a first-year student. The victim has been identified as Sahil Rawat, a first-year Hotel Management student.
According to a complaint filed by his father, Rajdeep Rawat, Chief Security Officer, AIIMS, Sahil was beaten up by his seniors in the basement parking of the campus on Thursday.
In the complaint, he identified Nikhil, Anurag, Prithiviraj, Paavana, and one unknown person as accused.
"I got a call from my wife saying Sahil had bruises on his face and arms and was complaining of severe headache. Reportedly, a group of boys had got hold of him and beaten him up. I called him to AIIMS and got a medical test done. The doctors also called it a medical-legal case," Rajdeep said.
Speaking to DNA, Sahil said: "Actually, one of the accused had been provoking me ever since I joined college. On Thursday, I was doing some cleaning task in our classroom, for which we are given marks, when he came to meet his cousin, who is my classmate. I told him to wait outside for five minutes as the floor was wet but he got angry and started abusing me. His cousin intervened and calmed him down. I could hear him threatening to beat me."
He further said: "He kept calling me throughout the day but I did not answer him. Later in the day, while I was going towards my classroom, he came up to me and said he wanted to have a word with me in the basement parking. As soon as we reached there, a few boys attacked me from behind. The boys warned me against reporting the matter to anyone. As soon as my classmates came to know about the incident, they informed the faculty. "
When Sahil approached a faculty member, MP Verma, a diploma course teacher, he asked him to keep the matter to himself, warning him that this could lead to his suspension.
Meanwhile, the university authorities have assured strict action against the accused. "The matter came to light when Rajdeep informed us about the incident. Ragging is not tolerated on our campus at all. We will take strict action against the accused after looking at the CCTV footage. Action will also be taken against Verma as he should have informed us," said Amity University Vice Chancellor Balvinder Shukla said.
The police have registered a case under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Ragging In Educational Institute Act, 2010 (Section 5) and 323, 504, 506, and 147 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), SHO, Sector 39, Amarnath Yadav said.
