38-year-old man killed after being hit by speeding car

A 38-year-old man was killed after he was hit by a speeding car on Outer Ring Road near Mukundpur Chowk on Saturday evening. It was found that the errant driver was in an inebriated state at the time of the accident and even tried to flee from the spot. However, he was caught by the public and his vehicle was set afire.

The deceased was identified as Sanjeev Singh, who worked as a labourer and was a resident of Jahangirpuri. According to the police, the incident took place around 9 pm on Saturday night when Singh was trying to cross the road near the chowk. Witnesses told the police that he was hit so hard that Singh was thrown meters away and he sustained critical injuries.

"They said that the driver, who was later identified as Ashok Kumar, was drunk at the time of the accident. Kumar tried to flee from the spot after the mishap but was chased and nabbed by the locals, who first thrashed him and then set his car on fire. Kumar was coming from Burari and was heading towards Mukundpur when his car hit Singh. Locals called up the police and the victim was rushed to a nearby hospital but he had succumbed to the injuries by that time," a senior police officer said.

Police said that the accused appeared to be drunk and later a medical examination confirmed that he had consumed alcohol. A case of rash driving and causing death due to negligence and other relevant sections was registered against Kumar at the Jahangirpuri Police Station and he was arrested.

Kumar works for a private company."Singh's family has been informed and the body was sent for a post-mortem examination," police said.

Police have also registered a separate case of arson against the mob for burning the car and said that efforts to identify the miscreants are being made.
