The west district of Delhi police have arrested a man for allegedly imposing as an IPS officer and using beacon lights and logo of Delhi Police on his car to support his claim on Wednesday night from Hari Nagar area of west Delhi. Police said that he posed as a police officer to impress his friends and relative.

According to the police, the accused has been identified as Divay Malhotra, a resident of Meenakshi Garden, was arrested by the staff of Hari Nagar Police Station during routine checking as advised by the Commissioner of Police, Delhi.

"We had placed barricades and were on our routine patrolling at Miraj Cinema Picket. At around 10.20 pm, one Accent car came from Meenakshi Garden area towards Subhash Nagar flashing Beacon Lights used by Delhi Police was spotted. A logo of Delhi Police was also found pasted on the front wind shield of the car," said Monika Bhardwaj Deputy Commissioner of Police, West district.

Suddenly Malhotra sitting inside the car started giving directions to the picket staff through the PA system attached with the Beacon Lights.

"On enquiry, he informed that he is an IPS officer and started rebuking the staff. His behavior, activities and personal appearance were found suspicious. He was asked to produce his identity card, on which he became furious and started threatening the staff that he is a son of Assistant Commissioner of Police of Delhi Police," said Bharadwaj.

However, on sustained enquiry, his identity was revealed as Divay Malhotra. During search of the car, one more Beacon light was recovered. Following which a case under sections 186 (Obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 170(Personating a public servant) and 419 (Punishment for cheating by personation) of the Indian Penal code.

"During interrogation, he disclosed that he was fond of showing off and to create an impression on friends and society, he was using the police beacons, sirens and logo. He ran a cyber café his area," said Bharadwaj.

Police said that he has studied only up to class 12 and that both his parents are doctors. "He said his mother retired as a doctor from Lady Hardinge Hospital and is presently teaching in a private university, while his father runs a private clinic," said a senior police officer.
