Shoppers facing the parking blues at the busy Lajpat Nagar Central Market in south Delhi can now heave a sigh of relief. The south civic body has handed over three of its major sites to the trader association, who now manage these parking lots.

The three sites are Feroze Gandhi Road, Veer Savarkar Marg and the parking near Haldiram's. The trader association will be managing these sites on a pilot basis for a period of one year. The move was announced after it was observed that the parking attendants issued unauthorised slips to car-owners, flouting the set norms.

The three roads are the busiest with a heavy footfall, especially over the weekends. Despite Feroze Gandhi Marg being made a one-way traffic zone, traffic jams choke these roads on a daily basis. The traffic snarls remain a problem even after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) banned parking of vehicles beyond the yellow line on these roads last year. Only a single layer of parking is now allowed within the yellow line on the metalled roads.

"The association will be allowed to run the three parking sites at a guaranteed amount of Rs 15 lakh per month. The operation and maintenance of these sites will be as per the orders of the NGT," said Shyam Sharma, Mayor, south corporation.

The market association will install CCTVs and deploy its attendants with hand-held devices.

"We are trying to make the switch at the earliest, for the convenience of the visitors. The association will make arrangements, at its own cost, for insurance and liabilities for the loss or damages of the vehicles,"he said. The switch was proposed last year, after the NGT order, since the multi-level parking lot proposed by the corporation is still far from ready.

"We have been asking the civic body to hand over its surface parking to the association for long. Finally, they have moved on it. There is a lot of chaos in the market as the parking attendants do not follow the norms and give fake slips to people, leading to layers of parking blocking the traffic,"said Sanjay Arora, a member of the trader association.
