Three months have passed and yet the Delhi Police’s elite unit, Crime Branch, has been unable to make any headway in the case of the missing Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student, Najeeb Ahmed.

“The investigation is back to square one,” said a source, adding that the police have now decided to issue more posters across three states — Delhi, Uttar Pradesh (UP), and Rajasthan. Also, senior Crime Branch officers will issue advertisements regarding the missing 27-year-old in all national dailies, appealing to citizens to come forward with any information regarding Najeeb’s whereabouts.

Sources further said the case was in the priority list of Lieutenant Governor (LG) Anil Baijal, who was keeping a keen eye on all minute developments related to the case. They also said that Baijal has planned to seek status report of the case from Commissioner of Police, Alok Kumar Verma, during his visit to the police headquarters.

Earlier, former LG Najeeb Jung had pulled up Verma several times in reference to the case.

The Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP) Ravinder Yadav has constituted several teams to locate Najeed and is monitoring the case personally. All efforts, however, have been in vain so far.

Meanwhile, the Crime Branch has taken permission to conduct polygraph (lie detector) test on nine JNU students, including Najeeb’s roommate Mohammad Qasim. Currently, many of the students connected to the probe are out of Delhi because of vacations and have been asked to give their consent for the test.

Police have also served notices to nine people, including Najeeb’s family members and the students with whom he was allegedly involved in a brawl outside his hostel the night before he vanished. “Once they are examined, things will be clearer,” a source said.

Earlier, the police had also written to the Facebook authorities in an attempt to get some clues in the case. Ahmed was active on the social media site till a week after he went missing. He even chatted with some of his contacts. The police are trying to get the details of the locations from where he logged on to his account. According to sources, Najeeb is an “extrovert” in the virtual world.

A native of the Badaun district in UP, the first-year MSc student went missing on October 15 after a scuffle with some ABVP members the night before. The Delhi Police have announced a reward of Rs 10 lakh for anybody providing information about him.
