Around 25 people were injured after a fire broke out inside a slum, apparently due to gas leakage from a gas cylinder in South-East Delhi's Shrinivaspuri area on Sunday evening. Hundreds of huts were gutted in the fire which was controlled within half an hour.

According to the fire control room, a call was received at 7:07 pm about a fire in the slum due to gas leakage from a cyclinder. "There was a fire caused by a cyclinder and due to dry trash kept in the lanes the fire spread fast. Four fire tenders were rushed to the location and the fire was doused by 7:30 pm," said a fire official.

Residents of the area stated that the house of one Kishan Kumar had a cylinder which had a leakage issue. In order to get that checked, the family members carried the cyclinder to a shop in the lane. Diwarkar, whose sister-in-law is one of those greviously injured and continues to remain in the Intensive Care unit (ICU), said, "The shop is located right next to our house. The cylinder had leakage issues and the shop keeper put a cap on it because of which for some seconds the leakage stopped but again the pressure was too much and the cylinder fell down and a fire was ignited. The police, fire department and the ambulance, none arrived on time," said Diwarkar.

In all, 25 patients were brought to Safdarjung Hospital after a fire broke out in Delhi's Narela area. While 21 were discharged, four are being treated for minor to moderate burns. "One of the patients has 55 per cent burns while the rest have 20-25 per cent burns, but all are stable," says Dr Rakesh Kain, Professor of Plastic Surgery, Safdarjung Hospital.

"There are high chances of toxic fumes getting accumulated in fires like these, we are currently monitoring all patients' condition to check any respiratory tract irritation caused due to the fumes. Their status should be clear in the next couple of days," he added further.

Locals claimed that while Safdarjung had discharged around 19 people, they came back and complained of the skin hurting and hence visited a local hospital themselves and few were admitted as well.

A toy making factory was housed in the four-storey building.
