The morning vehicle pile-up at the Meerut-Ghaziabad Road claimed two lives on Monday after a truck hit a bike. The incident took place when a speeding truck rammed into a bike while drifting away so as not to hit the early morning vehicle pile-up on the highway.

The deceased were identified as Devendra (41) and Naresh (40). A total of nine vehicles were involved in the pile-up which also left two others injured. The injured were identified as Ram and Amit, who were rushed to Kansal Hospital where doctors declared them out of danger.

According to the police, the incident occurred at a busy road near Ghookna Morh under the Sihani Gate police station around 8 am on Monday when a speeding bus hit a car from behind leading to the pile-up. One of these vehicles tried to move away and came in front of a truck, which was coming from the opposite side.

"Trying to save the collision, the truck driver tried to drift away towards left, but hit a bike on which Devendra and Naresh were riding," said Vinod Kumar Pandey, Station House Officer, Sihani Gate police station. Both of them died on the spot. Both the drivers of the truck and the bus had fled the spot by the time police arrived.

The deceased were employees in different private companies. They were neighbours in Ghookna village of Ghaziabad. Devendra had gone to the nearby market to collect 'pooja ingredients' as he had bought a house recently and he had organised a housewarming ceremony at his place. "After investigating the matter, we have registered a case under Indian Penal Code section 304(A) for causing death due to negligence. Both the drivers are absconding but they will be held soon," said Pandey.
