In one of its kind case, an eighteen-month-old has arrived at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) with an extremely rare type of tumour on his face. Rohan has had this tumour since he was six-month-old and fell from the bed. The bleeding, which then stopped, turned into a tumour, which has covered his entire face and is hugely affecting vision in his right eye. Experts say that a tumour this size has never been seen on an infant before in the country.

On Friday, Rohan Paul, who was brought to the hospital by his father, Ratikanta Paul, went through an initial round of chemotherapy while doctors are still studying the effects of the tumour on his facial organs.

"He was a toddler when he fell from the bed and his nose bled. We took him first to a nearby clinic and then Silchar Medical College. The small clot/tumour that developed has been on an increase since then. After trying all big hospitals in the Northeast, we decided to come here," said Ratikanta, an auto-rickshaw driver from Guwahati in Assam.

In one year, Rohan's tumour arising from his nasal cavity has progressively increased, including a rapid growth in the last 45 days. The tumour has reduced his breathing to only 28 per minute. The 7*7 tumour has occupied his cheek, right eye, oral cavity and is now causing him pain. As doctors study the case, the family, after hearing the successful separation of Jagga-Balia, is hopeful that their child will be relieved off the pain.

"Neuroblastoma is an extremely rare condition and a tumour this size on an eighteen-month-old is a rare case. There have been Neuroblastoma cases in adults where it generally affects stomach, neck or chest," said Dr Pravesh Mehra, Maxillofacial Surgeon, Lady Hardinge Medical College.
