At least 150 flights were affected as the visibility dropped drastically at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) on Friday morning due to fog. The Meteorological department said that the visibility had dipped sown to less than 50 meters on Republic Day.

Officials said the arrivals were happening intermittently, but the departures were on hold for some time. After 10 am, both departures and arrivals had resumed normally. Three runways at the IGI airport 28, 29 and 11 are certified for CAT III B operations, which would allow landing of the compliant aircraft with visibility as low as 50 meters, the officer said. For take-off, an aircraft would require a visibility of at least 125 meters. He further said that information related to the delays and cancellations were updated time to time at the Delhi Airport’s website to keep the passengers updated.

Last year, 18 Runway Visual Range devices were installed at the Delhi Airport with full redundancy on main runways 11/29 and 10/28 and partial redundancy on runway 27. This was done to reduce delays and congestion due to fog by devising a plan that would ensure smooth flow of flight information, on an almost real time basis, to the passengers.

Officials further said that keeping in mind the fog and other adverse weather conditions that are expected in future, they have planned to undertake several measures to ensure passenger convenience. Deployment of additional traffic marshals for smooth taxi flow during fog, adequate lighting in the car parking areas and increased airport patrol vehicles fitted with radio sets and beacons are some of the measures that will be taken to ensure smoothness on city side. “Display of weather information inside terminals, additional conspicuous help desks at entry gates where information on cancellations and delays will be displayed and additional seating capacity in the terminal building will be ensured. Apart from this, airlines will be briefed for deployment of additional staff,” the officer said.
