`1.25 crore in new currency notes recovered from northeast Delhi

In a big seizure, Delhi Police detained four men and recovered more than Rs 1.25 crore cash in new currency notes from them, in different incidents in northeast Delhi on Saturday. Senior police officers said that the men along with the cash were handed over to the Income Tax Department for further probe.

The recovery was made during a special picket checking at Machli Farm area in northeast Delhi’s Seelampur. Ajit Singla, DCP (Northeast) said that the alert staff at the police picket intercepted a vehicle and upon checking it found about Rs 50 lakh cash.

“The man occupying the vehicle was identified as Jasmeet Singh (24), a resident of Paschim Vihar and the driver was identified as Gurmeg. Meanwhile, our staff stopped another vehicle on receiving information and found Rs 25 lakh cash from the driver who as later identified as Pankaj, a resident of Shanti Nagar area. In yet another case, Rs 50.3 lakh was recovered from a man, who identified himself as Arun and is a resident of Shahadra. A few signed and unsigned cheques were also retrieved from his car. All the three incidents combined, police made a total seizure of  around Rs 1,25 crore,” Singla said.

Police said that the entire cash retrieved were in new currency and in the denomination of Rs 500 and Rs 2000. Rs 100 notes worth Rs 10,000 were also there. “Our staff intercepted the money and detained the persons carrying them. We also  informed the returning officer of the area i.e., the SDM and DM northeast,” the DCP said.
