11 cops face cash-related charges

With as many as 11 of its personnel landing in the docks for various offences in the last 15 days of demonetization, the Delhi Police have been left embarrassed. Sources in the department said that the allegations ranged from blackmail to misreporting of cash recoveries, and disciplinary action has already been initiated against all 11 police officers.

Senior officers in the Delhi Police, however, said that the cases were still being investigated, in isolation, and couldn't be linked to demonetization yet.

"Legal and disciplinary actions against the police personnel were initiated as soon as the complaints were received. All the cases reported so far are not linked. Strict action will be taken against the accused, if found guilty," an officer said.

Sources in the Delhi Police added that given the grave nature of the situation, instructions have been issued to all officers and personnel to refrain from any lucrative offers during raids being conducted on black money hoarders. "Top officers have taken a strong note of complaints and have issued instructions to all officers to ensure that lawful code of conduct is maintained by everyone,"said an officer.

The cases

November 25: A Delhi Police inspector and three of his junior officers from the special staff of Outer District were transferred to district lines and relieved of their present posting after a complaint was registered that they were involved in siphoning off Rs 10 lakh from a man caught with Rs 30 lakh in cash. An inquiry has been ordered against the four.

November 24: Three traffic police constables were booked for allegedly extorting Rs 1.20 lakh, mostly in Rs 500 notes, from a Janakpuri resident, which he was carrying for his nephew's wedding.

November 23: An FIR was registered against the Jahangirpuri SHO and three junior staffers on a complaint that they embezzled Rs 1 crore seized from a scrap dealer during a raid on November 15. The four cops, who have now been transferred, allegedly did not inform their seniors about the raid.

November 23: An FIR was registered against three traffic police constables for attempting to rob a man of Rs 1.20 lakh after they found the money in his car's dashboard.
