DU staff screened for cancer, 6 suspected

Out of the 79 females who were screened for cervical cancer, two tested positive for the disease. Similarly, 108 were tested for breast cancer, of which lumps were detected in two. Two others were tested positive for mouth cancer.

Taking the cancer to the basic level, the National Institute for Cancer Prevention and Research (NICPR) screened 109 from Delhi University including males and females.

"A total of 105 women were screened by different preventive health tests during the camp and all the tests were administered free of charge to all the participants. The tests offered were general health checkup, clinical breast exam, oral examination was performed in all women," said Dr Ravi Mehrotra, director, NICPR.

"A specialised service of cervical screening was offered to 69 women which were above 30 years," he added.

The main focus of the workshop was to promote cancer prevention by disseminating information on key risk factors.

The workshop promoted health-seeking behaviour of educated women regarding their role in promotion of cancer prevention and the health awareness in the society.

"The ill effects of tobacco consumption on the young generation is leading to not only the cancer causation but other equally horrendous clinical manifestations of the oral cavity," added Dr Mehrotra.

India is likely to have over 17.3 lakh new cases of cancer and over 8.8 lakh deaths due to the disease by 2025.
