10-year-old killed, 3 injured in Noida building collapse

According to locals, renovation work was underway at the building for the last two months.

A 10-year-old boy was killed and three others including two girls were injured after a part of a canopy of a three-storey building collapsed in Nithari village in Noida on Monday, said police.

The incident took place at around 4.30 pm in Nithari village situated in sector 31, Noida , officials said.

According to locals, renovation work was underway at the building for the last two months.

A woman who lives in the same locality said she was inside her house when she heard a loud noise and later realised that the building adjacent to her house had collapsed.

"We were inside our house when all of a sudden, the power went out and simultaneously we heard a very loud noise. When we peeped outside, we saw people running around and debris on the street," Omwati, a resident of Nithari Village.

Omwati said that police were immediately informed about the incident and soon the rescue operations began.

The house belonged to Vijender Awana and was under renovation.

Residents of the locality said the building was being demolished so that a new building could be constructed and the tragedy occurred when a part of the second storey collapsed onto the canopy of the first floor.

"That is when the canopy collapsed on the street and passerby's were trapped under the debris", Omwati added.

According to the locals, the street is one of the busiest ones in the area. Four bodies were retrieved during the rescue operations out of which two were of girls and two of boys.

The two eighteen-year-old rescued girls were taken to the Noida Medical Centre where they are currently undergoing necessary treatment. While the boys were taken to the district hospital where 12-year-old Shakeel was discharged after receiving first aid. However, 10-year-old, Luv Subba, a native of Darjeeling, couldn't survive his injuries.

Police officials told the portal that the debris is currently being removed, though no more people are expected to be trapped inside.

"A three storey building has collapsed in sector 31, Nithari under police station sector 20. Three people are injured one kid has died. The injured have bene admitted to hospital. The debris is being cleared and the situation is under control. The incident will be investigated thoroughly," said Vaibhav Krishna, senior superintendent of police (Noida).

Police have registered a case based on the complaint received from the family of the deceased.
