What is the possibility of a Barcelona or London-like attack at Janpath?

These vehicular and lone-wolf attacks are prevented by intelligence agencies. It is not easy to monitor every person and, therefore, people are put under surveillance based on intelligence profiling. Even if the intelligence fails, the police can still react, and we are prepared for any untoward situation.

What measures have been put in place to tackle such a situation, if need be?

We have installed 27 CCTV cameras in the market. Apart from this, we have barricaded both sides and it is not possible for any vehicle to enter the busy Janpath market. We have police posts in the market, where round-the-clock presence pf personnel is ensured. Besides, entrances of the market are manned by private guards hired by market associations.

With the security of the market in hands of private guards, how does the police ensure safety?

We train the private guards about how to use hand-held metal detectors and about the functioning of door-frame detectors. We have beat staffers who monitor the guards' working. These beat staffers are, in turn, monitored by their seniors. There's a chain of supervisors and no one can escape with negligence.

Has any additional deployment been ensured recently?

We do that when there is an alert. After recent attacks in foreign countries, security has been stepped up. We even install additional cameras, temporarily, on various occasions, such as the Yoga Day or Independence Day. All precautionary and requisite measures are taken to ensure the safety of civilians.
