DNA Edit: Security guards in societies need to be well-trained

Recent crime incidents in Noida’s high rises have raised serious questions on the safety measures in residential complexes that are manned by 24x7 security guards. The case of a drunken security guard, who tried to rape a woman as he entered a flat in one of the housing complexes in Greater Noida is alarming.  

In another recent incident a woman was shot dead in the parking of a residential complex. The entire incident was captured on CCTVs. If the footage was monitored by a person in real time someone could have raised an alarm and saved the woman, who was killed after being chased by her killer. After investigation it was found that the killer was known to the woman and they were friends.

Having security is one thing, but are these security personnel well trained and competent at their job? Background checks of these security guards are also crucial for the safety of residents.

The builders along with the police need to put in place a mechanism to regulate the private security companies providing guards to these residential complexes.

With housing complexes mushrooming in the National Capital Region the security and safety is one of the key areas that need to be addressed. It is important to note that many of these have come up in areas that have been hotbeds of criminal activities.
