The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are all set to conduct a women’s T20 exhibition match which will involve top Indian and international cricketers during the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019.

The BCCI had organised a one-match Women's T20 Challenge at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in 2018. Taking the exercise forward, the board will conduct a set of matches, according to a report in ESPNCricinfo.

The planning of the matches has been going on for a few months, however, staging a full-fledged domestic women's T20 league in India like the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) in Australia or the Kia Super League in the UK may not be possible as of now. The main reason for not having a big league is that BCCI has concerns over the depth of India's domestic pool of players.

This year as well, there will be just two teams, with the BCCI inclined on making the two sides play a best-of-three series. Keeping in with the IPL format, the teams will have a maximum of four overseas players per team, the report stated.

Both the BCCI and the Committee of Administrators (CoA) have given a green light to the idea and a firm plan is yet to be drawn up.

The reason for the delay is that the BCCI is still waiting to finalise the IPL schedule, which is subject to the Election Commission of India announcing the date for the General Elections.

Once the IPL schedule is out, the BCCI will figure out a plan for the number of matches and players needed for the exhibition games.

The last year’s one-off Women's T20 Challenge in Mumbai was played as a curtain-raiser to the first IPL Qualifier. It comprised two teams - the IPL Supernovas and the IPL Trailblazers - which had a mix of Indian and foreign cricketers.

India’s T20I captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana led the Supernovas and the Trailblazers respectively.

Harmanpreet's Supernovas clinched the title by three wickets. New Zealand's Suzie Bates, despite being on the losing side, had won the Player-of-the-Match award for her all-round performance.

The tournament also featured overseas players including Australia's Meg Lanning, Ellyse Perry, and Alyssa Healy, England's Danielle Wyatt and Danielle Hazell, and New Zealand's Sophie Devine and Lea Tahuhu.
